Your Share - September 2009
Remember EarthShare in your Workplace Giving Campaign!
We work hard because you work hard. Your gifts to EarthShare and our 70 environmental and conservation groups are vital to sustain livable communities, fresh air, clean water and preserve the environment for generations to come. $5 a month sponsors a child in the Natural Education & Awareness program by Tualatin Riverkeepers. $42 a month conserves 1/2 acre of Willamette Valley wetlands by Greenbelt Land Trust. There are even more reasons to give to EarthShare:
- Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides keeps children healthy by bringing organic potato famers together with school meal programs to enhance nutrition for vulnerable populations.
- The Rocky Mountain Institute reduced energy consumption in building renovations, like the Empire State Building, where an integrated approach saved double the energy of typical retrofits.
- Friends of Trees plants thousands of trees in Portland to bring people together in their communitites and to absorb carbon, which reduces global warming.
- Hells Canyon Preservation Council reduced bighorn sheep's risk of disease from domestic sheep by working with the Forest Service to close areas from domestic sheep grazing and develop long-term management guildlines for bighorn.

Fanged frogs, rat-eating plants and fish tongue-eating parasites

In early September, scientists found a "lost world of fanged frogs and giant rats" in Papua New Guinea. In fact, more than 40 new species were discovered in a volcanic crater and the country's rainforests, including a giant woolly rat never before seen by scientists. Read more>
