Survey Finds: Employers, Share Your Sustainability Goals to Employees at All Levels

While more and more companies and corporations are taking responsibility for their role in creating a sustainable future, a recent study shows they may be leaving out a critical piece of the puzzle when it comes to meeting their goals - their employees.

A report just published by Brighter Planet called "Employee Engagement Survey: An Analysis of the Extent and Nature of Employee Sustainability Programs" reveals a significant failure to engage employees in the overall sustainability goals of their employers. According to the report, success relies on involving staff at all levels when striving to "fuse sustainability with profitability." So where's the disconnect?

  • Most respondents feel their employers' efforts to engage them are too basic, for example, providing recycling bins rather than "linking bonuses to environmental metrics."
  • Communication is lacking: 32% of respondents said their company never shares sustainability goals and strategies with employees.
  •  67% of employees would like their employer to change its stance on sustainability, suggesting that there is "high staff receptivity and support for new employee engagement and environmental programs."
