A Few Successes of 2009

Many EarthShare member nonprofits have some wonderful stories of success to show for their 2009 work.  Just a few recent accomplishments include:

  • American Rivers cleaned 2.3 million pounds of trash from rivers in 47 states via its National River Cleanup (TM) program.  U.S. rivers also saw 58 dams removed, which restored rivers to their natural flow so the communities and wildlife that depend on them can thrive.
  • Bicycle Transportation Alliance got 30,000 Oregon students participating in its Walk + Bike To School program this fall.  And the adults did their part, too -- 11,000 Oregonians (including 2,640 NEW bike riders) rode our bikes to work in September's Bike Commute Challenge. The BCC riders put in 1.2 million bike miles just during this challenge!
  • Oregon Wild, Pacific Rivers Council, and other EarthShare groups were part of the breakthrough negotiation of the "Oregon Eastside Forest Restoration, Old Growth Protection and Jobs Act", which will allow for logging in Eastern Oregon that will protect old growth forests AND improve opportunities for logging in the region.
