One of the biggest problems facing those seeking to make an impact in the environmental sector is the sense of conflict and partisanship that has enveloped much of the environmental agenda. You don't have to look too far to find people promoting the idea that climate change is a myth, for example, or disputing that human activity can have an impact on it.

Added to that is the fact that many of the organizations springing up to deal with these very modern challenges face the problem of any new product: lack of recognition in the marketplace.

Put those two factors together and a clear theme emerges: ... (Read the FULL article at CSRWire.)

Join the EarthShare Oregon team this summer to help us raise awareness of -- and funds for -- environmental charities!

EarthShare Oregon is a federation of 73 environmental nonprofit organizations, providing a connection between Oregon workplaces and these conservation groups. We help employees at business and government workplaces learn about the work of the environmental groups in a number of ways: through our website, social media, e-newsletters, and other electronic communication; through in-person contact at various events (including volunteer events, green team meetings, benefits fairs, etc. hosted in the workplace or for employees of the workplace); through paid and earned media coverage of events and issues; and through distribution of printed materials and promotional items.

This summer, we are offering Outreach and Communication Internships, so that students have the opportunity to hone their marketing and outreach skills by working with our staff to design and develop outreach and communications tools and materials, to plan and implement outreach events, and to give public presentations at workplaces and events.

Ideal candidates would be extremely competent and comfortable with all the software used in marketing and communications, would have a demonstrated interest in and passion for the environment and nonprofit work, and would be creative and flexible and able to work well in a small team, where each person wears many different hats and takes on lots of different responsibilities, depending on the situation and the need. We're looking for students with a lot of ideas and with the energy and ability to implement them! Projects will be based partly on our needs and partly on the student's interests and educational goals. Students will be supervised by the Executive Director, though they will work with and under the direction of other staff, depending on the assignment.

The position is unpaid, however, we will provide any necessary documentation or other support needed for external stipends or course credit. Recognizing that it is a summer position, and students need time to vacation, travel, and pursue other interests too, we envision a part-time position of 20 to 30 hours per week, though the exact requirement is open to discussion (and may need to be tailored to stipend or credit requirements).

Apply by submitting (a) a cover letter indicating your interest in and suitability for the position, (b) a resume, (c) a recent transcript showing courses taken and grades received to date, and (d) one (and only one - please do not send your whole portfolio!) sample of a marketing item you have designed or developed. Put all of these documents together in one pdf file, and email them to the Summer Internship Selection Committee at info@earthshare-oregon.org.

We do a lot of shopping this time of year. The average American family spends just under $1,000 per year on holiday gifts, and then there's holiday food, parties, and decorations to top it off. After all is said and done, celebrating the season often adds up to a lot of stuff and a pretty big hole in our wallets too. Fortunately, just a few small steps can go a long way in making your holiday season, and every season, a little greener.

This month we've rounded up our top tips for making your next shopping trip easier on the planet and your budget.

Shop local. If you're close to a community or urban center, take your bike, walk, or hop on public transportation to check out unique finds from local artists and businesses. Spending your holiday dollars in your district can help fuel your local economy. And don't forget to support your local farmers by stocking up on fresh produce for your holiday feasts at a farmers market in your area.

Give something meaningful. Sharing a gift of time, a special experience, or simply an extra patient and cheerful attitude can be much more meaningful than the latest electronic gadget or fashion accessory. Give hugs and smiles liberally. Give homemade baked goods. Give coupons for back rubs or picnics. Give a charitable donation to a special charity in honor of your loved ones who probably don’t need or want more stuff anyway.

Give vintage and eco-chic. Remember to check out your local thrift stores and secondhand shops for great and unusual finds. Bring along your gently used clothing and goods to make a donation too.

Bring your own bag and green wrap your gifts. With Portland's new plastic bag ban, you're probably already taking advantage of reusable bags and totes at the grocery store, so why not bring your own bags to the mall too? While you're at it, tell your sales clerks to hold off on the excess tissue paper and free boxes. You just don't need it -- here are some alternatives from our reusing giftwrap quiz. Also, remember that in Portland pastic bags are banned.

Give to the environment while you shop. Our friends at Nonprofit Shopping Mall have made it easy to give to your favorite EarthShare charities while making your regular online purchases, and with no added cost at checkout. Find EarthShare on their charity list to make a percentage of your purchases help protect our natural resources, wildlife, public lands, and more.

Shop online. Why face the crowds when you can take care of your shopping in your pajamas? Online shopping is generally a little better for the environment than trekking to a mall. Delivery systems are pretty efficient these days and shopping online means you won't be driving. So, less gas to buy and fewer fuel emissions, definitely a win-win.

Plan your trip. Try to time your shopping trip for days and times that tend to have less traffic congestion on the roads you'll be using. Also, it’s a good idea to make one trip instead of five, so if you have a lot of stops in mind, try to fit them all into one day.

Be a smart shopper. Not all "green" products live up to their labels. Do your research on products you are considering by visiting the retailer's website, asking questions, and reading customer reviews. Look for Energy Star, Organic, Forest Stewardship Council, and Fair Trade certified items -- these labels are monitored by trusted agencies and non-profits.

The Springwater's history stretches back to the early 1900s, when a rail line was built to bring people, produce and timber from areas south and east of Portland into the growing metropolis. Known variously as the Portland Traction Company Line, the Cazadero Line and the Bellrose Line, the railroad finally adopted the name of the Springwater Division Line—likely because of hopes that it would one day stretch to the town of Springwater, about 30 miles southeast of downtown Portland. (In a bit of historical irony, neither the railroad nor the trail that bears the town's name ever reached this small community.) Read full article>

The Gulf Oil Disaster - One Year Later

What have EarthShare charities done to improve conditions for the people and ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico? Here's a rundown:

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, tragically killing 11 crewmembers. Over the next 84 days up to 185,000,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to threatening more than 27,000 jobs directly dependent on the Gulf Coast fishing industry and almost 15,000 tourism-related jobs, the largest oil spill in U.S. history continues to impact the Gulf’s many vital ecosystems, our food sources, and more than 25 endangered species.

One year after the disaster questions remain: What is the true extent of the damage? Will the marshlands recover? Will affected species rebound? How long will it take, and how can we better protect ourselves and our environment?

Thanks to the support of donors like you, EarthShare’s member charities have had the capacity to be active responders from day one.

One of the most heartwarming success stories is how EarthShare member National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) saved tens of thousands of baby sea turtle hatchlings by relocating hundreds of nests to Florida’s Atlantic coast – one of the largest wildlife relocation projects in history. Please visit our site to learn more about how NFWF partnered with FedEx to safely transport the fragile eggs thousands of miles.

Here are just a few more examples of how EarthShare charities have responded in the region:

IMMEDIATE RESPONSE – EarthShare’s member organizations represent some of the world’s top experts in oil spill response and ocean and marsh restoration and ecology. Shortly after the incident, our member charities were called upon to serve as advisors for the Unified Command.

Defenders of Wildlife, Environmental Defense Fund and Ocean Conservancy’s experts were quickly deployed to assist in impact assessment and to advise on plans for restoration.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATION

Many EarthShare member organizations, including National Wildlife Federation, The Nature Conservancy, and Ocean Conservancy mobilized thousands of volunteers to remove trash from beaches before the oil hit. You can connect with them here for ongoing projects and re-plantings: GulfResponse.org, wildlife volunteers.

The National Audubon Society offered a sign-up registry for volunteers who wanted to help rescue injured birds and clean oil off beaches. They continue to call on volunteers across the country to help protect migrating bird habitat in their communities. Many types of birds have to make a long journey across the Gulf of Mexico during migration and the environmental disaster makes this perilous. Audubon is organizing volunteers to help these birds by making sure they can find plenty of food, water, and shelter at other points along their journey. You can locate an Audubon chapter close to you to get involved.

INFORMATION TRACKING

– In an area as large as the Gulf of Mexico, tracking and analyzing the impact of the oil spill was a tremendous challenge, but a critical undertaking:

EarthShare members Ocean Conservancy and Surfrider Foundation teamed up with SkyTruth to create an online Gulf Oil Spill Tracker. The interactive website catalogued many sightings of oil and oiled wildlife throughout the gulf region.

National Wildlife Federation deployed volunteer surveillance teams to observe more than 10,000 miles of shoreline along the Gulf Coast. The data collected illustrated the far reach of the spill and will aid response to any future similar spills.

Environmental Defense Fund is working to ensure scientific vigilance by establishing a long-term, science-based monitoring program to track the ongoing impacts of the oil on the environment for both restoration efforts and future disaster response planning.

RESTORATION – Here are just a few examples of how EarthShare charities are continuing the vital work needed to bring the Gulf region back to a healthy state:

Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) continues in its ongoing efforts to restore coastal Louisiana, the degradation of which makes the impact of the oil spill worse for the ecosystem, fisheries and fishing communities. EDF teamed up with local organizations as well as national groups to restore this valuable resource.

National Wildlife Federation invested in a Mobile Bay restoration project that will provide critical nursery habitat for numerous finfish and shellfish stocks while more affected areas recover.

The Nature Conservancy’s continuing efforts to restore the Texas Gulf Coast, which features ecological restoration as well as the establishment of sustainable fishing industries, is already being viewed by some as a model for restoration across the entire Gulf Coast region.

ADVOCACY – Some EarthShare member charities are working for a cleaner, greener U.S. energy policy, passage of stronger environmental protection laws, and stricter enforcement of existing laws:

EarthShare member charity The Freshwater Trust extends a big thanks to NW Natural for its help on the Salmon River project. This spring, 70 NW Natural volunteers (pictured above) helped plant 140 Western Red Cedar trees along the Salmon River, one of the four main tributaries of the Sandy River. The trees will improve bank stability, and over the long term contribute large wood to the river.
Oregon’s nonprofit environmental federation announces new executive director

Jan Wilson, an environmental advocate and attorney, will lead EarthShare Oregon

Today, EarthShare Oregon announces its new executive director: Jan Wilson, an environmental attorney from the Western Environmental Law Center in Eugene. Jan has been involved with EarthShare Oregon for many years as a valued volunteer, through her role as a board member of Oregon Wild, one of EarthShare’s 70 member organizations.

“I’ve volunteered with EarthShare and I love connecting businesses with the environment,” Jan said. “I am so excited to have the opportunity to move into the next phase of my career, and to make that move with EarthShare Oregon.”

She has worked in environmental law for more than 10 years in the Eugene-Springfield area with several private and nonprofit organizations. Jan’s education and background are broader than just legal expertise – she also holds a degree in computer engineering from the University of Michigan.

“EarthShare hired Jan partly for her ability to move programs forward,” said Gillian Ockner, EarthShare Oregon’s Board President. “But we also know she’s been a key advocate and fundraiser for Oregon Wild. We feel lucky to have someone with her range of skills and love for Oregon’s natural treasures.”

Jan moved to Oregon nearly 15 years ago, from Michigan, and immediately started exploring the beautiful forests and rivers of the Pacific Northwest.

“I fell in love with Oregon from the first day I arrived. I knew I wanted to protect the legacy of a healthy environment for myself and my family,” Jan said. “EarthShare Oregon is the perfect place for me to continue that mission.”

Background:
EarthShare Oregon is Oregon’s only nonprofit federation connecting Oregon businesses and their employees with environmental nonprofits. It partners with 100+ businesses statewide to offer the convenience of workplace giving and connections to nature and sustainability resources. EarthShare Oregon has raised more than $11 million for its list of 70 Oregon and national conservation nonprofits over 21 years of operation.
